AI literacy programs aren't measuring what actually matters
I actually dug into this Hechinger Report piece and it's raising something I've been worried about. So colleges are rolling out all these AI workshops and certificates to show students they're "AI ready," but here's the thing: nobody's actually tracking whether these programs teach responsible use or just tool familiarity. That gap matters huge for those of us going back to school because we're often juggling work, family, and figuring out what skills actually translate to job offers. If we're spending time on certificates that look good on paper but don't teach us how to use AI ethically or know when NOT to rely on it, we're kind of wasting that limited time. The article doesn't have all the answers yet, but it's pushing universities to do better evaluation, and I think that's a conversation worth having in our community before we sign up for another program.
