colleges closing and what happens to all that space

I know this sounds silly but I got kind of sad reading about these empty college campuses with weeds growing everywhere. I found this story about how advocates want to convert closed colleges into housing instead of just letting them sit there abandoned, and honestly it hit different for me because I'm thinking about going back to school and the whole affordability piece of this is terrifying. Maybe someone else feels this way too, but the housing crisis is already so bad that it seems wasteful to have all these buildings just rotting when people need places to live. The article even has a tracker to check if your college has financial problems, which I wish I had known about before I was already committed to paying their tuition. I think about all the classrooms and dorms that could be helping people instead of falling apart, and it makes me wonder if we're thinking about education and housing all wrong. It's one of those stories that feels small until you realize it's actually about choices we make that affect so many of us.
