I put off calling my school's financial aid office for two weeks. Not because I was busy. Because I did not know what to say. I kept imagining myself stumbling over my words, asking the wrong questions, and hanging up feeling stupid.
When I finally called, the person on the other end was perfectly nice. She walked me through everything. And I kicked myself for waiting so long because that one call led to $2,400 in additional grant money I would have missed.
So here are the exact scripts I wish I had. Print them out, pull them up on your phone, whatever works. Just read them word for word and let the person on the other end do the rest.
Script 1: Calling a Financial Aid Office
Use this when you want to make sure you are getting every dollar available from a school.
"Hi, my name is [your name]. I am [a current student / considering attending your school] and I want to make sure I have applied for every grant and scholarship available to me. I have already filed my FAFSA. Can you check if there are any institutional grants, departmental scholarships, or emergency funds I might qualify for that are not automatically included in my aid package?"
Why this works: Financial aid counselors deal with students who only ask "how much do I owe?" This question signals that you are proactive and know that hidden money exists. Most schools have institutional grants that require a separate application, and many students never hear about them.
Script 2: Calling About a Specific Grant Program
Use this when you have found a grant online and want to confirm eligibility before spending time on the application.
"Hi, I am interested in applying for [grant name]. Before I start the application, I wanted to confirm a few things. I am a [your age] year old woman, [single mom / working adult / returning student], and I am planning to study [field]. Am I eligible? And can you tell me the current deadline and any documents I will need?"
Why this works: You are giving them the key details upfront so they can give you a quick yes or no. This saves you from spending hours on an application you do not qualify for.
Script 3: Calling About Your FAFSA Status
Use this when your FAFSA has been submitted but you have not heard back or something seems delayed.
"Hi, my name is [your name] and my student ID is [number]. I submitted my FAFSA on [date] and I want to check on the status. Has it been processed? Are there any issues or missing documents that I need to address?"

Script 4: Appealing Your Aid Package
Yes, you can appeal. Most people do not know this. If your financial situation has changed (job loss, medical bills, divorce), you can ask for more.
"Hi, my name is [your name] and I recently received my financial aid package. Since I filed my FAFSA, my financial situation has changed. [I lost my job / I had unexpected medical expenses / I am now a single parent.] Is there an appeal process to have my aid reconsidered? What documentation would you need from me?"
Why this works: Schools have discretion to adjust your aid package based on special circumstances. But they can only do it if you ask. I have seen women get an additional $1,000 to $5,000 per year just by making this one call.
Tips for Every Call
- Write down the person's name at the start of the call. If you need to call back, you can ask for them directly.
- Take notes. Write down everything they tell you, including deadlines, document names, and next steps.
- Ask for email confirmation. After the call, say: "Can you send me a summary of what we discussed by email?" This creates a paper trail.
- Be polite but persistent. If the first person says no, ask: "Is there someone else I could speak with about additional funding options?"
Not Sure What Grants to Call About?
My free grant finder will give you a personalized list of grants you qualify for, so you know exactly which ones to follow up on.
Find My GrantsThe phone call feels like the hardest part. But it is usually the fastest way to get answers and unlock money you did not know was there. You do not need to be an expert. You just need a script and the willingness to dial. If you want to understand the full grant process before you pick up the phone, read what nobody tells you about applying for grants. And if you need to request your old transcripts during the call, I have a step by step transcript guide too.
