Most women I talk to know about the Pell Grant. A few know their state has grants too. Almost none know about the private grant money sitting in foundations and nonprofits all over the country.
Grant money exists at three levels and you can get funding from all three at the same time.
How the Three Types Compare
| Type | Who Funds It | Typical Amount | How to Apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Federal | U.S. Department of Education | Up to $7,395/yr (Pell), up to $4,000 (SEOG) | FAFSA only |
| State | Your state government | $500 to $8,500+ depending on state | Usually FAFSA, some have separate apps |
| Private | Foundations, nonprofits, companies | $500 to full tuition | Separate application per scholarship |
Federal Grants: The Foundation
Pell Grant: Up to $7,395 per year based on financial need. File the FAFSA and your school determines your award automatically.
SEOG: Up to $4,000 per year for Pell recipients with the highest need. Your school's financial aid office distributes it. You do not apply separately.
State Grants: The Second Layer
Every state runs its own programs on top of federal money. Examples:
| State | Program | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | TEXAS Grant | Up to $8,464/yr |
| California | Cal Grant A | Up to $9,220/yr |
| New York | Excelsior Scholarship | Full tuition at SUNY/CUNY |
| Michigan | Michigan Reconnect | Free community college (25+) |
| Tennessee | Tennessee Reconnect | Free community college (adults) |
| Florida | Florida Student Assistance Grant | Up to $2,510/yr |
Most state grants are awarded automatically when you file the FAFSA. A few require a separate state application. Check your state's higher education agency website.
Private Grants: The Third Layer
This is the layer most women miss. Private grants for women returning to school include:
- Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award: $1,000 to $10,000 for women who are primary financial supporters of their household.
- Jeannette Rankin Foundation: For women 35 and older with financial need pursuing undergraduate or certificate programs.
- AAUW Career Development Grant: $2,000 to $12,000 for women with a bachelor's degree who need further education to advance.
- Talbots Women's Scholarship: Up to $30,000 for women returning after at least 10 years out.
- Local community foundation scholarships: Every county has scholarships for local residents that rarely get enough applicants.
What Stacking All Three Looks Like
Example: Three Layers Combined
| Source | Amount |
|---|---|
| Federal Pell Grant | $7,395 |
| Federal SEOG | $1,000 |
| State grant | $3,500 |
| Soroptimist Award | $2,000 |
| Local foundation scholarship | $1,000 |
| Total | $14,895 per year |
File the FAFSA first to lock in layers one and two. Then apply for two or three private scholarships. Even winning one small private award can cover books and fees for the year.
