Which Industries Hire Certificates vs Degrees

Not every field values credentials the same way. Here is a breakdown by industry.

Healthcare: This is the sweet spot for certificates. Medical coding, billing, pharmacy tech, phlebotomy, dental assisting, and CNA positions all hire based on certification. Women make up 77% of the healthcare workforce (BLS, 2023), and 85% of certificate holders find employment quickly. If you want to move into nursing or healthcare management later, many of these certificates count toward degree requirements.

Technology: IT certifications like CompTIA A+, Google IT Support, and AWS Cloud Practitioner can get your foot in the door. Starting salaries range from $40,000 to $55,000. However, for software development, data science, or cybersecurity management, employers increasingly want at least an associate degree.

Skilled Trades: Electrical, HVAC, welding, and plumbing certifications lead directly to employment and often to apprenticeships with excellent pay. These fields have strong demand and less student debt than degree paths.

The Stacking Strategy: Why You Do Not Have to Choose Forever

Here is something most career advisors do not tell you. The decision between a certificate and a degree does not have to be permanent. The smartest approach for many women is to stack credentials over time.

Start with a certificate that gets you working and earning more within months. Then, while you are employed in your new field, pursue an associate or bachelor's degree. Many certificate credits transfer toward degree programs, especially at community colleges that design their programs with stacking in mind.

The financial math works beautifully. You earn $35,000 to $50,000 while studying instead of taking on debt as a full time student. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement of $5,250 per year (the IRS tax free limit), which covers most community college tuition. And you qualify for Pell Grants up to $7,395 per year as long as you are enrolled at least half time and have not yet earned a bachelor's degree.

A woman in our community used this exact strategy. She started with a pharmacy tech certificate ($4,200, nine months), worked as a pharmacy tech for two years earning $37,000, then enrolled in a part time nursing program paid mostly by her employer.
